Guess what……..Taylor, Henry and I are off to Western, Massachusetts to learn a bit more about apples.

Camping is involved, and cold nights are ahead of us.  But guess what, we love apples! And it will be great to learn a lot more about growing them.

We have learned a lot about organic apples from the best. John Bemis (my father-in-law).

However, this weekend, Taylor and I are going to our very first apple conference where we will learn a variety of things. Everything from new growing techniques, diseases, pests, sprays, and even making your own hard cider.  We are hoping to learn a lot!

As you all know, apples are a big part of Hutchins Farm, and we put in a lot of hard work into the orchards. It will be great to learn a bit more about apples and the future of growing them in a sustainable way.  We are excited to say the least.

Henry is coming along because apples are his favorite fruit. (not because we couldn’t find a dog sitter!)

Be back on Sunday with a new dinner recipe and hopefully a fun recap of the weekend!

Pay special attention to the cider part and see if they know how to get the lawyers to let you sell it unpasteurized. Sounds like a great conference. Enjoy!

      Jean,
Farmers can sell it unpasteurized. you have to be licensed and sell it directly to the customer. No third parties. The regulations are very strict about where your operation is. Lots of money. But a lot of farmers in central Ma are doing it! Which is good news! wish we could sell ours….
